Top Engineering Values

Each team is asked to select, explain, and rank their top 8 values in order of importance.
  • Start-to-Finish Ownership

Extreme ownership is very important at Blockstack.

Reliability is one of the most important qualities we look for. The work our engineers are assigned or take on gets done, on time, without exception, and quality is never compromised. We are a small and flat organization, so everyone has an opportunity to share their thoughts with the team and contribute to the direction of the company. At Blockstack, ownership is focused on project inception and follow-through. Engineers are in charge of their feature or upgrade and work both independently and collaboratively to make sure the appropriate work happens with high quality results.

We emphasize ownership even beyond engineering. One team member was in charge of our Blockstack Summit in summer 2017. He took full responsibility to make it happen, and took 3 months to complete. The rest of the team saw what he had built when they showed up to the event.

  • Customer Comes First

Our customers are both developers and every day web consumers.

We are an open-source project with over >7k community developers who contribute to our code. We have a Slack channel that has >4k members and we regularly interact with people in the channel. We actively seek feedback from the community, our customers, and view feedback as a necessary component in order to build a successful product.

  • Engages with Community

We belong to the open source community ourselves and many of our consumers do too.

For us, there is little separation between our developer community, and ourselves. Additionally, we host Meet-ups in New York, San Francisco, and we recently announced our new meet-ups in Japan, Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Bangalore. See a list of Meet-ups here. We hosted the Blockstack Summit 2017 in July as well. Our larger community can be found on Github, Slack, and Twitter.

  • Flexible Work Arrangements

Everyone has different needs, and we’ll be sure to accommodate yours.

Engineers typically work from 9:30am to 6:30pm or 7pm, but that varies. Our main focus is on productivity and availability to engage with the rest of the team. Our headquarters are in NYC, but we have a distributed team with core members in Hong Kong and San Francisco. We prefer people to work on-site when possible, but it's not a deal breaker for us. Some of our core team members work fully remotely.

We work hard to accommodate the different lifestyles of our team members so that everyone is set up for success. One of our engineers commutes from New Jersey, so he comes in mid-morning and dials-in to our team stand-up. One of our co-founders leaves early a couple times a month in order to pick his daughter up from daycare. We want to ensure that everyone is empowered to do their best work.

  • Rapidly Growing Team

We are looking to double the team in the next 6 months, and then stay lean past that.

We are focusing on making the right hires. We see every new team member as a high-impact player in a long-term project. We expect new team members to be pretty self sufficient in a period of 1-2 months. We provide clear guidance, feedback, and KPIs at a high level, but there is little day-to-day managerial oversight. Our team members need to be solutions providers.

In terms of actual work, our front-end team is focused on building a beautiful consumer-facing browser. Our next Product Manager hire will take on responsibility from our co-founders in driving innovation and usability of our product. These are high level and high visibility projects. • Committed to Personal Growth

Personal growth is reflected in one of our prior values: extreme ownership.

Engineers at Blockstack are encouraged to run with their ideas, and there is no shortage of opportunities for engineers to take on here. We are still a small team working towards a new frontier and encourage a culture that challenges the status quo. As an engineer, we hope you'll seek out more responsibilities and will never limit your ambitions. We want everyone to push themselves as they push the world towards a decentralized internet.

We also pay for engineers to go to conferences. For example, one of our engineers is attending and likely presenting at Scaling Bitcoin 2017 - Stanford University. We host conferences as well (see Blockstack Summit 2017), and have an extremely collaborative workspace.

  • Open Source Contributor

Blockstack is an open source project and a Public Benefit Corporation.

The mission of Blockstack Public Benefit Corporation is to enable an open, decentralized internet which will benefit all internet users by allowing the users to own their data. Two of our repositories on Github have over 1k stars. Everyone on the team is active in the open source community by either contributing code or engaging in discussion with the larger community on our Slack and Forum.

If you have lots of questions about what problems we solve and how we’re doing it, you can read all about it in our FAQ. If you still have questions, reach out to us!

  • Impressive Team Members

We have 3 Princeton PhDs on the team, and multiple people who have either started their own or helped to scale start-up companies.

Our co founders Ryan Shea and Muneeb Ali went through Y Combinator in 2014 and are well known in the blockchain space. You can learn more about our cofounders Ryan (Twitter, Medium, Github), and Muneeb (Twitter, Medium, Github), and meet the rest of the team on our About Page. We are also grateful to have the confidence of investors like Union Square Ventures, Lux Capital, Shana Fisher, and Naval Ravikant.
