Open communication is about being transparent about the motivation behind why you want to do something.
It means having an honest dialogue about how a decision will benefit you, the team, your end customers, and discussing the various ways to achieve it. At Creator Deck Media, we go into every conversation with the assumption that everyone wants the best outcome for the team and every individual involved in the project. With that as our foundation, everyone can openly share their ideas in context of how value is created, distributed, and shared amongst everyone on the team.
Practically speaking, it’s easy for us to facilitate discussions. We have a small office and everyone sits closely with one another. We do have full time employees that work remotely, but they are still very close to the team. Remote-engineering staff is ok too.
We are a technology enabled media creation company.
We work on large scale/budget media creation projects for Fortune 500 companies. There are two product lines to our company:
- Agency - We are the consulting wing to many companies in the realm of influencer and content marketing. Our clients include JCPenney, H&M, Michelin, Victoria’s Secret, amongst many others. Some perks include free lip balms during the winter and invitation to fashion shows in NY during February and September. Almost everyone on our team has attended a fashion show in NY in the past!
- SAAS - We have a software product that helps enterprise companies manage their influencer collaboration process. We also use this product internally within our own agency.
Heavily Team Oriented
Everyone is involved in the decision making.
As founders, we go out of our way to collect everyone’s feedback through monthly one-on-one meetings, surveys, and voting on Trello/excel, this includes office location, off-site activities, as well general company process improvements. We are open to hiring individuals who prefer to work alone. At the end of the day, it's about getting the work done, and finding joy and meaning in the work that you do, regardless of the personalities around you. I want to attract candidates who want to take on a lot of responsibility at a growth stage company, is emotionally mature, and wants to work in a drama free environment.
Committed to Personal Growth
We have a very small engineering team, so the ownership is on the engineer to let us know the area he/she wants to develop.
Whether it’s product management, UX, management, or a specific expertise, we work closely with the individual to get there. Currently, we only have one hands-on engineer, so the room to take on a lot of responsibility is tremendous. Libby joined our team as a graphic designer, but she realized through working here that she prefers to work in client facing roles and move projects along, she now is an account strategist.
We are a small team so everyone has to demonstrate clear value to the team, and to the client.
On the engineering side, we get weekly requests from clients which need to be addressed quickly, with thoughtful strategy and implementation. We use Trello extensively and go out of our way to get the engineers’ feedback before starting a project. It doesn't feel frantic but busy with a sense of urgency. We get feature requests and bug fixes. Mostly feature requests. We usually say yes to feature requests with an estimated timeline. The big differentiator with our company is that we are users of our own product on the agency side, so we build ahead of clients. Almost 95% of the feature requests coming in are projects already in progress as we have internally asked for them, so we speak with credibility and sound cadence.
Creative + Innovative
We are a product that serves the creative community, and the best fit engineer would be a creative himself/herself.
Whether it’s photography, dancing, or music, we hope you have a passion pursuit of your own that allows you to relate to the mind of our end users.
We’re a creative bunch ourselves: one of our founders used to be the lead singer in a band in high school, another team member was a part-time wedding photographer. We also have a stand-up comedian on the team who performs all over the Bay Area. Whatever your creative outlet is, we’re happy you have one.
High Employee Retention
We have a team of eight including the founders.
The most junior person has been with us for a year, but was also an intern for us for a year while she was in college. Everyone with the exception of our recent sales director hire has been with us for 3+ years. The reason our employees stay a long time is because we as a company is small and agile enough to take on work that is in alignment with our core values, and that makes everyday exciting and meaningful. As such, being part of a growing team that offers opportunity to work on the projects you want to work on feels like a new challenge every year!
