  • Cutting-Edge Technologies

    Our speech process system translates videos into the World’s languages without losing the characteristics that make each individual’s voice unique.

    It’s a unique technology that has never existed before. This is only possible with a great engineering team composed of talent from Cambridge, Oxford, NYU, and UCL, and we have the world’s leading academics in speech processing - Simon King and Mark Gales as our advisors.


    We’re looking for machine learning engineers who are comfortable with frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, or are willing to push themselves to know these frameworks like the back of their hand.


    We’re also looking for full-stack (Python/JS) developers who are customer oriented and have the ability to keep iterating the client-facing self-service platform as we navigate unexplored territories. Our developers also work closely with ML Engineers to streamline the pipeline, and enforce the discipline needed for a tidy, clean, production-ready code-base.


  • Fast-Paced Environment

    We’re building a product that has never existed before, which means we have to keep learning from our users in order to to keep iterating.

    This is why we often create micro-teams of 2 or 3 people, who will work on a specific feature or task, and we regroup every 2 weeks to gather our thoughts, re-prioritise, and create new micro-team combinations to keep on experimenting and iterating. We monitor the impact of the videos we produce and combines that from the video creators to help define our product.


    We also pride ourselves on the cutting-edge technology we have build, and that means we have to keep moving quickly, by pushing the state of the art in machine learning and speech processing, so we won’t be left behind by much bigger players.

  • Product-Driven

    We think the research doesn’t mean anything until you place the technology right in the hands of your users and customers.

    For us, that’s video creators, ranging from semi-professionals making videos for YouTube or Facebook, to those who work in the productions for TV or films. We are building the platform that allows any video creator to translate their content into the World’s languages.


    We believe that the only way to keep going forward is to build a fantastic video translation platform that’s a delight to use. It means that we have to work closely with our users, not only on how people are using our platform, but also what impact translated videos are making for creators as well as their viewers.

  • Light Meetings

    Meetings are meant to be decisive. They should not get in the way of getting things done.

    Everyone at Papercup can expect a monthly one-to-one and showcase, a weekly engineering team check-in, and a 10-minute daily stand-up to make sure everyone’s on the same page. That’s it!


    We don’t believe in delaying decisions just because they’re difficult, nor do we want to spend too much time getting everyone up to speed at every meeting. So we ask everyone to show up to meetings well informed and prepared, in order to keep the meetings themselves short.

    In fact, we want you to be hungry to discover, learn, and grow. We’re building a team where everyone has their strengths, that they can use to support and mentor others. Many of the engineers starting with us have just come out of university, or are developers trying out new technologies.


    We look for sharp peaks of ability in our hires, whether that’s someone who can understand complex concepts very quickly, but may not have the programming skills; or someone who has a great edge in systems architecture, but not the understanding of advanced machine learning.

    We started out in Entrepreneur First in 2017, where Jesse and Jiameng met to turn the idea of video translation into reality.

    Jiameng joined EF having researched around the technology for 2 years and met Jesse, who went out to find the market and customers who really need the product. We realised that we’re in a race against time to build the best product possible, because of that we’ve been raising and hiring quickly.


    We’re building our team from the 2 co-founders to a founding team of 12-15 people by the end of 2018, each of whom will be responsible for core aspects of our product, meaning you’ll see new faces almost everyone month!
