Top Engineering Values

Each team is asked to select, explain, and rank their top 8 values in order of importance.
  • Heavily Team Oriented

As creators of opinionated software for operating better teams, we take collaboration seriously.

Our teams have a clear purpose, and people work together toward shared objectives. We are not a culture of individual achievers, even though individual accountabilities are clear. Objectives are set on a three-month cadence where the full team weighs in. Each month, we conduct a retrospective process that serves as an opportunity to clarify roles and improve the way we work together. Each week, we use our own software to prioritize against planned objectives and emergent opportunities. We’re a small team that works closely with one another -- get to know us!

  • Open Communication

We are open and honest internally and externally.

It starts from the beginning of our professional relationship. When we negotiate salary we’ll show you the company’s financials and ask, “How much would you like to take out of the business?” This continues into your employment experience with us: we endeavor to create trust by expecting and accepting the frank truth and seeking and receiving feedback. We encourage communication habits that encourage psychological safety, such as asking questions that seek to understand before offering one’s opinions. At the end of each week, the company writes a public Friday Ship blog post sharing our key metrics and progress with the world. We seek not only to be honest with each other, but honest with the public as well.

  • Open Source Contributor

We believe that the benefits of contributing to the open-source community far outweighs the risks.

Most of our SaaS application is open source. We believe that the benefits of contributing to the open-source community far outweighs the risks. Being open-source first not only forwards human knowledge, but it’s also savvy business. The demand for great technical talent has never been higher, and operating in the open enables us to make the walls of our organization more permeable, and build genuine relationships with great folks. We’re authors of the popular Meatier web development stack along with many other smaller, useful projects, and make contributions to other projects as well.

  • Flexible Work Arrangements

We’re a completely distributed and remote organization, committed to hiring wherever we find talent

The only mandatory scheduling revolves around our core cadences: making your team’s weekly meeting and making our quarterly all-team retreats. All other meetings are ad hoc. It’s common for team members to work on a variety of schedules including surfing at lunchtime, or taking a personal day.

  • EQ > IQ

You know what’s better than one smart person? Harnessing collective intelligence.

To make this level of collaboration possible, it takes individuals who value and are capable of operating in a diverse ensemble. This is doubly true for an all-remote team. This means developing the skills necessary to give honest feedback without removing safety. It also means knowing what it takes to develop trusting relationships. Breaking into the productivity market takes a fair amount of hubris: we won’t get anywhere without being able to empathize with our users and design solutions that exceed their needs. This isn’t possible with raw intellect alone. During the interview process we have a few methods for screening empathy: we often look at a candidate's ability to write a rich job story. If they capture a rich user context, it's a generally a positive signal for EQ. Everyone on our engineering team has access to our customers – either during customer advisory board meetings, design validation sessions, or (gulp) during bug triage – making the best use of our own and our customers’ time requires emotional candlepower.

  • Safe Environment to Fail

We honor curiosity and experimentation as a cornerstone of intelligence.

We actively encourage the offering and exploration of new ideas, even if their value is uncertain to the broader team. If a next step forward on an idea can’t be agreed upon, we encourage parties to agree on an experiment instead. An experiment is something that is safe to try and has a clear hypothesis of what outcomes are expected. From its execution, we’ll all learn something of value, and should it fail it won’t cause the organization unavoidable or serious harm.

  • Continuous Feedback

Feedback is designed into and encouraged within our organization at every level.

We are very data- and metrics-oriented, and each team reviews how their core metrics have changed over the last week. On an individual level, people are encouraged to seek feedback on work products in short cycles before shipping to their end customer. If an employee has feedback to offer another, it’s encouraged to ask, “May I give you some feedback?” before proceeding. Should conflict arise between individuals, we have a process for facilitating difficult conversations that encourages mutual understanding, respect, and personal growth.

  • Has Internship Program

We think of our interns as a shrewd investment for future talent and influential alumni.

Since quite early in our startup’s history, we’ve offered an internship program. For engineering students or folks looking to restart their careers, we offer an alternative experience to working in scaled organization: our interns get direct experience in growing an early-stage startup, work on cutting-edge collaboration application, develop strong teaming skills, and be able to link to their open-source contributions as proof for future employers as to what they’ve accomplished.
