Bonded by Love for Product
We provide education, believe in the on-going education of our employees, and love every part of learning.
Belief in our mission, and the product, is a strong bonding force for our team. Many of us are self-taught, have taken online courses, or are even Udacity graduates ourselves. We are united in our belief that we are working to change the world for the better.
Risk-Taking > Stability
We are willing to make big bets, even if sometimes they fail.
Our culture embraces experimentation, innovation, and big thinking. If you try something out and it doesn't work, that's totally okay! Just learn from it for the next thing you try. We'll close down experiments if we think they're not quite working out, and share learnings from them so that we can incorporate improvements into new products for the future. We move fast, and sometimes things can get a little chaotic, but you'll never be bored.
Flexible Work Arrangements
About 1/5 of the company works remote, and we are a remote-friendly team as well, with team members in several locations.
We use Slack and Google Hangouts heavily to all stay on the same page, and mark working hours on our calendars so we all know when we’re available. Our main consistent live touchpoint each day is a daily standup meeting, and we ask that you give the team heads up on when you’ll be out, but other than that, we like to empower you to arrange things how you like! We work from all different cities, from offices and homes, and sometimes with pets and/or kids in the background.
Actively Practices Inclusion
We are a global company that welcomes, supports, and respects all, and the Careers Team is focused on supporting our diverse students through graduation to their first job.
Our students and employees come from all across the planet, and from all sorts of backgrounds. We work to enable all our students to find new careers in technology, no matter what their previous path might look like. We recognize and appreciate this diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, and there's nothing better than hearing back from a student that we've helped them land their dream job.
Our company at large also supports the various lifestyles, responsibilities, and personal circumstances of our employees by providing lactation rooms for new mothers, paid parental leave, flexible work arrangements (roughly 1 out of 5 employees works remote), and reimbursements for ongoing learning and professional development. We are committed to creating and maintaining workplaces, classrooms, forums, and more that are free of judgement, bias, or discrimination. In fact, if you have questions about what life is really like on our team, feel free to contact Amelia Lin on the Careers team.
Team is Diverse
We come from a wide variety of backgrounds ourselves, and we welcome people who have chosen to carve their own paths.
You'll find many people here who have changed their career once or thrice, and you'll also find many inveterate self-teachers and passionate learners. It's rare to find someone here who isn't working on learning some new skill or other outside of work. Whether you were an opera singer or a financial advisor before you became an engineer, you are welcome here! We're a mix of ages, locations (lots of people work remote), parents and non-parents.
We’re working to keep up with the growth of Udacity’s student body, and provide excellent career resources and services at scale.
We're hiring for engineers because we have lots of ideas and we're moving fast, and it's time for our team to grow to keep up! Udacity already teams up with leading tech companies to craft our Nanodegree programs: industry credentials for today's jobs in technology. The Careers team’s charter is to help our students gain the career skills and opportunities they need to get and succeed in a job. You will build products that empower and enable our students to achieve their dream jobs, and be part of some of the most personal and important stories our students choose to share with us—their search for a new career. Come join our team, and help us build the best career services office your university never had.
We share everything openly, from financials to feedback and we expect that transparency from all future employees.
Within the Careers team, you'll be working most closely with 2 other full stack engineers and 1 product manager, but also the rest of the Careers team, members of the Design and Data teams, and of course you will be a member of the larger Udacity Engineering team as well. We loosely follow Agile methodology and work in 1-week sprints, with daily standups, and we communicate a lot over Slack.
Customer Comes First
The motto "Students First" rings true on the Careers team: we do everything to help our students launch and advance their careers.
It’s no coincidence that several of our engineers are actually current or former Udacity students themselves! We really care about our students, and the user experience. Udacity is full of people who have changed careers or self-taught skillsets online, so we empathize with our students’ goals.
