    Nearly 115 million people in the U.S. live with either prediabetes or diabetes, and the number is growing. It’s a story that hits close to home, since Sami Inkinen (co-founder and CEO) learned he had pre-diabetes the same year he won his age group at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Sami wasn’t satisfied with the conventional wisdom of “exercising more and eating less” and knew there had to be a better way. He partnered with nutrition and metabolic health experts, Drs. Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek, and thus Virta Health was born – with the goal of reversing type 2 diabetes in 100 million people by 2025. Knowing that we’re making a tangible difference in people’s lives is a constant source of daily motivation and something that unites us all.


    Many people with diabetes only see a medical provider every few months, when in reality, they have to make hourly decisions about their health. With our mobile app, we’re able to skip waiting rooms and give patients near real-time access to medical providers and health coaches.


    Whether it’s nutrition coaching, behavioral advice, or medical care, we leverage technology and a science-based approach to personalize recommendations and ensure long-term success. For example, Virta’s focus on personalized nutrition helps change blood sugar levels naturally, which means patients can reduce their usage of medications like insulin. Our technology surfaces these needs to medical providers who can proactively contact patients to de-prescribe medications.   • High Quality Code Base

    Safety is top of mind in everything we do.

    Reversing diabetes is complex and people’s lives depend on it. We write meaningful and automated tests that are as close to real-world scenarios as possible in order to ensure our code is safe and keep sensitive data secure. Similarly, we choose tools that enforce safety and catch errors before they ever become a problem, such as typed languages, linters, static analyzers, and database constraints.


    To stay ahead of the competition, we adopt DevOps methodologies such as maintaining our infrastructure as code, incorporating feedback from users into multi-day deployments, and having a robust fault tolerance via monitoring systems that alert us when necessary. Engineers at Virta are familiar and stay up-to-date with bleeding-edge technologies such as Google Cloud Platform, Linux, Golang, Python, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, and Terraform. We also avoid creating technical debt by enforcing test coverage and code reviews for every code addition. Ultimately, maintaining a high-quality code base allows us to scale and support the company’s hockey stick growth.

  • Continuous Delivery

    We are constantly learning and adapting.

    A perfect implementation isn’t necessary when a good implementation delivers value. We believe in iterating and recognize that we won’t have all of the answers up front. By taking bold, but educated steps to collect more information, we build a trove of data to drive future decisions. Engineers submit GitHub pull requests, which trigger linting, testing, and code quality scans before allowing a reviewer to approve it. After it’s approved, the PR triggers CircleCI to deploy to different environments (staging, prod, etc.). Automating our deployment pipelines allows us to deploy multiple times per day to production.

    Elevating our own talent is important to us, especially as we grow.

    We want to work with great people who are excited about self-improvement both in their personal and professional lives. One way we do that is by offering stipends that can be used toward continuing education, books, and tech conferences. In addition to our annual review process, we encourage shoutouts during all-hands syncs to recognize each other’s hard work. In fact, it’s common for engineers to share demos, so we can shine a spotlight on what folks are working on. We encourage career growth in whichever way allows engineers to feel accomplished, be it as an individual contributor or a move into management. Both Allison and Martin were just promoted during the most recent cycle, while Neha, Chad, Avery, Michael, and Travis were recently promoted to engineering management/leadership roles!

    Engineers have a large influence on the product roadmap.

    Since we intend to be here for the long haul, we’re intentional about finding simple solutions. Not only are they easier to understand, but they’re also safer to change as we grow. We think long-term about the software we develop and we’ll never ship if we feel we’re risking the user experience. At the same time, we don’t spend time on features if we don't need them. Engineers are empowered to ship code often and choose the right tools needed to build the best product possible. For instance, in order to cut costs and help scale our infrastructure, we migrated from a 3rd-party vendor to our own in-house GCP infrastructure solution.


  • Actively Practices Inclusion

    Building a diverse and inclusive team is crucial to our success.

    It’s important that our team reflects the diverse population we serve. We value different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds and foster a sense of “no ego.” One way we support diversity and inclusion at Virta is with our employee resource groups (ERGs), which host programs and events that help recruit, grow, and retain teammates from underrepresented and marginalized groups, while continuing to educate the company as a whole. Our ERGs include Virtans for Diversity, Women in Engineering, Parents of Virta, Green Committee, and Ladies of Virta. At the end of the day, we believe in a team-oriented approach and encourage everyone’s voice to be heard.

  • Work/Life Balance

    We prioritize employees’ mental and physical health.

    In order to support our rapid growth, we recognize how important it is to have a healthy work/life balance. Our leadership leads by example and advocates taking PTO to avoid burnout. It can be all too easy to have Zoom fatigue these days and we encourage engineers to take mental breaks in between Zoom sessions. We also have company-wide hackathons to allow for play time; some examples of past hackathon features that we still use today include our weekly-summary page, custom monitoring solutions, and the search functionality in our content platform! When it comes to physical health, we give everyone access to the Virta app (Virta for Virtans!) so they can have the same nutritional tools and healthy habit-building advice we provide to patients.


    Since our team is distributed, we have folks in multiple time zones and make sure to respect each other’s different working hours. That said, it’s nice to unwind together when we can, and we have annual summits (both in-person and virtual) to get to know each other better. We don’t expect you to be green on Slack 24/7 and know that everyone has a life outside of work. We’re proud to have several parents on the team, and whether you need to care for a sick child or leave early to attend a dance recital, we get it!     It’s clear that our approach to the nation’s metabolic crisis is working: In peer-reviewed clinical studies, 94% of patients using insulin decrease or eliminate their dosage at one year, and 63% of all diabetes prescriptions are eliminated. What’s more, weight loss results exceed the goals of the National Diabetes Prevention Program and the FDA benchmark for weight loss drugs by nearly 150%. We’re helping our customers – which include major health plans, government organizations, and large employers – save more than $10k per patient over two years. Not only have we experienced triple digit growth (133% YOY), but we also recently raised a $133M Series E and are hiring as quickly as we can.

Interview Process

We start with a phone screen with a non-technical recruiter, followed by a technical screen (1-hour coding exercise over Zoom). If that goes well, we’ll invite you to a virtual onsite (5 rounds, 2 behavioral, 2 coding, 1 with a recruiter).
