Engineering Team at VoiceOps

VoiceOps is the #1 AI platform for analyzing enterprise voice. The richest data source about customers — their conversations — is the least accessible. Our mission is to provide easy access to customer conversations and make voice data queryable. Our product analyzes the content of sales and support conversations and generates insights on phrases that maximize successful outcomes.

Top Engineering Values

Each team is asked to select, explain, and rank their top 8 values in order of importance.
  • Customer Comes First

Understanding the customer is one of our company’s three core values.

Our product roadmap is driven by customer feedback. Everyone in the company has some exposure to customers, be it through shadowing sales and customer success calls, watching recorded user sessions, or participating in user interviews. We’re very driven by what the customer wants as opposed to using cool technology for technology’s sake. All of our product roadmap is driven by customer feedback, discussed, and prioritized by the whole team. We’re looking for engineers that always have their end user in mind.

  • Fast-Paced Environment

On some days we deploy multiple times a day.

We value pushing an MVP out to get customer feedback before committing to full feature development. We’ve deployed all of our current features as very rough MVP’s first and then built them out more thoroughly only if it looked like customers actually wanted to use that feature. All of our engineers including interns ship on day 1.

  • Committed to Personal Growth

We write down our assumptions and conclusions for any kind of decision (recruiting, product, etc.) so we can learn from them in the future.

One of our engineers built a product that weighs team’s predictions based on how well they’ve performed on predictions in the past. We now use as part of product planning and overall decision making (for reference read this). We take constant improvement and challenging our own biases very seriously.

  • Open Communication

Open communication is one of the 3 factors we use for screening candidates, so it’s a top priority for our team.

Our work environment is one where everyone can challenge anyone’s assumptions regardless of whether they’re one of the founders, a senior engineer, or a junior team member. We’re still a small team and take full advantage of the fact that we can operate with a flat organization. You can simply walk over or Slack the person you want to speak with. We do a lot of ad hoc meetings to quickly sync on a particular question, and the whole team checks in on Mondays and Fridays to track everyone’s progress and talk through things that affect everyone.

  • Wears Many Hats

All of our engineers are full stack.

We want everyone to have a general understanding of our system, and for any engineer to be able to fix any bug or implement any feature regardless of which part of the stack it touches. We also expect every team member to have a general understanding of the needs of the business, and to be able to help out on projects that are outside of their core role. As our team grows we’ll have more specialization, so it’s not a disqualifying factor if someone wants to focus just on the backend or just on the front end, but if you’re looking for broad exposure in order to gain experience across the board, you’ll find it here.

  • Rapidly Growing Team

Our customer traction has been growing very quickly, and that means that we need to build a lot of functionality on the product side too.

We’ll be looking to at least double the eng team in the next few months, and to continue growing rapidly from there. Right now we’re in the middle of a complete app redesign - we’ve had a lot more customer feedback and decided to redesign the app’s workflow - that will remain the biggest project for at least a few months. We’ll also need a lot of help with scaling the backend integration systems as the volume of calls that we’re processing continues to grow.

  • Heavily Team Oriented

Everyone is involved in decision making and we have a ‘no question is off the limits’ policy.

We value transparency and every team member is welcome to challenge anyone else’s assumptions. Our engineers constantly challenge Daria, the CEO, on any decision from how we run our 1:1’s to our annual planning process. One of our three team values is challenge everyone’s opinion and think for yourself.
