Having an internship program is completely symbiotic. From the perspective of an intern, you’ll work closely with a small team of 10 engineers and be exposed to the many sectors within engineering. Getting real-world experience before graduation helps students crystallize what they’ll pursue post-graduation. Plus, interns will leave BuildZoom with projects that build their personal portfolios.
From the perspective of more senior engineers at BuildZoom, our internship programs provides growth opportunities in learning how to manage and delegate project tasks. Furthermore, we believe that while we teach, we learn. Bringing an intern up to speed and teaching an intern about our tools and application is a powerful vehicle for learning. We currently have 5 interns: 1 designer, 1 product, and 3 engineers.
Our goal with our intern program is to strategically build out a pipeline of top level talent to eventually join us full time. We also make sure our interns gain exposure and learn from our more senior engineers by having both a senior manager and technical mentor to ensure they are set up for success.
A few things to highlight about our Internship program:
Since quite early in our startup’s history, we’ve offered an internship program. For engineering students or folks looking to restart their careers, we offer an alternative experience to working in scaled organization: our interns get direct experience in growing an early-stage startup, work on cutting-edge collaboration application, develop strong teaming skills, and be able to link to their open-source contributions as proof for future employers as to what they’ve accomplished.
